Our trivia night has been a major annual fundraiser for the past 4 years.
In 2012 we were given the opportunity to take a Little League Baseball Team - the 'Sunraysia Giants' away to Melbourne to compete in a new level of Baseball for our district. Our team from here qualified to play in the National Little League Championships on the Gold Coast! The winner of this Australian competition gets direct entry to the Little League World Series in Williamsport USA in August of every year!
This level of competition -16 teams of the best 10-12 year olds in Australia came at a team cost of over $20,000!
We started the Trivia to try and raise much need funds to help our Sunraysia Giants make the journey to the Gold Coast for the Nationals.
The first Trivia Night was held at the Aero Ovals Pavillon and it was supported very well with about 100 people attending and everyone having a fantastic time. We had a live auction halfway through the night which helped raise extra funds.
In 2013 our Giants team again proceeded from State Qualifiers to Nationals and were off to the Gold Coast again!
Due to the success of the previous years Trivia Night we decided to book the pavillion again and run the event for a second year. We were overwhelmed with the support we received for this year and saw numbers in attendance quickly grow to around 150! We had the live auctions again and the bottle toss which is always fun. We were also lucky to have one of the dad's, Paul Trevaskis play live music for the night. Once again this was a very successful night for raising funds for the team.
The third year, 2014 saw the Giants qualify from State to Nationals and were off to the Gold Coast for our third year straight.
Again holding our Trivia Night, it became know as an annual event. We decided due to the last years success that we would move to a bigger venue, The Irymple Leisure Centre. This was a great idea as pre sale of tickets was awesome! Again we were blown away by the support, as we had to chase up extra tables and chairs to accommodate about 200 people. We changed from live auction to silent auction which was a great time saver and a bit of fun for everyone to try and out bid each other during the course of the night. We still had the bottle toss and also added a lolly jar toss for the kids we did a guess how many lollies in a jar. Once again, a hugely successful fundraising evening..
Last year, 2015, unfortunately the Giants didn't make it to National but did their absolute best at the qualifiers. Despite not going to Nationals, we still held out annual trivia night.. By now we had built quite a reputation for a great night out and the night was still supported extremely well with about 220 people braving the cold night at the leisure centre again. The night had plenty of silent auction items again and the old favourites a bottle toss and lolly jar toss. We were well prepared this time with enough tables. Apart from being a very cold night everyone had a blast.
Now we come to this year, 2016. Unfortunately the Giants didn't qualify to Nationals. These kids amaze me every year when they go down to Melbourne to State qualifiers. They play to best of their ability, they never drop their heads and show the best sportsmanship possible. It is always something that is commented on when we go to the big smoke, the spirit of these players is a credit to our league, their coaches and families.
On Saturday 28th May 2016 will see the running of our Fifth Annual Trivia Night. We are hoping it will be a bit bigger again. We will be having our silent auction items again a coin toss, lolly jar toss, raffles and lucky squares. I feel that it has been a night that our baseball community and a lot of other people outside baseball look forward to. Our growing numbers over the years reflect this.
The success of our trivia night is credited to the families of the players that come along to have a great night out with friends and family and support these amazing young baseballers reach their dreams of playing at a higher level of a game they love.
A big thank you must go to the trivia master of all our trivia nights Mr Andrew Diwell, he spends a lot time in the lead up to each night researching question and comes along on the night to be the MC. He takes the worry out of the night for the organisers and he does an awesome job every year.
Last but not least these nights would not get off the ground and be possible without the group of people that have committed to supporting it over the past 4 years and looking forward to many more.
